Aurex is a Norwegian intellectual property boutique advising on trademarks, patents, designs, copyright, disputes, and related commercial matters.
The Firm
Aurex was founded with a clear objective: to provide commercially focused, highly specialised intellectual property counsel — delivered directly, without unnecessary complexity.
The firm works across a broad range of industries and technologies, with particular depth in technically complex matters. Aurex combines legal precision with practical and strategic guidance, with particular emphasis on responsiveness, efficiency, and long-term client relationships.
By maintaining a focused specialist practice, Aurex ensures that every matter receives direct, senior-level attention. No junior staff. No hand-offs. Just clear, expert advice from an attorney who knows your matter inside out.
Principal
Alexander Hallingstad is a Norwegian Attorney at Law with over eight years' experience in intellectual property law.
He advises on trademark, patent, design, copyright, and related commercial matters, including prosecution, disputes, portfolio management, enforcement, and strategic advisory work.
Before founding Aurex, Alexander was an attorney at a leading Norwegian IP firm, where he held key account responsibility for major Norwegian companies and their intellectual property portfolios. He has represented clients in proceedings before the Norwegian Industrial Property Office, the Board of Appeal, and Norwegian courts, including both formal hearings and judicial mediation. He has also represented clients directly before the EUIPO.
Earlier in his career, Alexander worked as a legal adviser and examiner at both the Norwegian Industrial Property Office and the Board of Appeal for Industrial Property Rights. This experience — on the decision-making side of the proceedings he now handles as counsel — provides a perspective that is difficult to replicate.
Technical Background
Alexander holds a BSc in Molecular Medicine and Biochemistry from the University of Essex, in addition to his law degree from the University of Bergen.
His studies covered cell biology, biochemistry, microbiology, organic and inorganic chemistry, and molecular medicine. His Master's thesis addressed the requirement of industrial applicability under Article 57 EPC as interpreted by the EPO — a directly relevant foundation for patent work in the life sciences and related fields.
This background provides genuine depth when advising on patent matters in life sciences, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and related fields — going beyond legal analysis to engage meaningfully with the underlying science.
Approach
Aurex believes effective intellectual property counsel should be both strategically sound and commercially practical.
The firm prioritises clear communication, efficient handling of matters, and advice tailored to each client's broader commercial objectives.
By maintaining a focused specialist practice, Aurex ensures that every matter receives direct, senior-level attention — from first instruction to final resolution.

Aurex advises on a broad range of intellectual property matters, with particular focus on trademarks, patents, designs, disputes, and related commercial work.
Aurex advises on national and international trademark matters before the Norwegian Industrial Property Office, including applications, office action responses, oppositions, and appeals.
For foreign rights-holders seeking to extend trademark protection to Norway through the Madrid System, a NIPO refusal can be a significant obstacle. Aurex prepares substantive, well-argued responses designed to overcome the objection and secure registration — drawing on direct experience working inside the Office itself.
Aurex advises on patent-related matters in cooperation with technical experts and foreign associates, including prosecution support, strategic advisory work, and dispute-related matters.
Aurex advises on the protection, registration, and enforcement of design rights in Norway and internationally. Registered design rights protect the appearance of a product — its shape, configuration, pattern, or ornamentation — and can be as strategically significant as patent or trademark protection in competitive markets.
Aurex advises on copyright, marketing law, unfair competition, and related regulatory matters connected to branding, advertising, and intellectual property strategy.
This includes advice on the protection and enforcement of copyright, compliance with Norwegian marketing regulations, and disputes involving comparative advertising, misleading claims, or unfair commercial practices. Marketing law in particular is an often-overlooked area that can provide valuable protection for businesses in Norway.
Aurex represents clients in intellectual property disputes before administrative bodies and courts, including oppositions, appeals, enforcement matters, negotiations, and related proceedings.
Aurex has the capability to handle IP matters before the Norwegian courts, including before the Oslo District Court. The firm also advises on trademark infringement, passing off, and unfair competition matters, and has experience in judicial mediation.
Aurex advises on commercial agreements and transactions involving intellectual property rights, including licensing, assignments, coexistence agreements, settlement agreements, and related negotiations.
Whether you are licensing a brand, assigning a patent portfolio, or structuring an R&D collaboration agreement, Aurex ensures your contractual position is clear, enforceable, and aligned with your commercial objectives.
Practical & Strategic Counsel
Aurex combines specialist intellectual property expertise with commercially focused advice tailored to each client's business objectives.
The firm works closely with clients, technical experts, and foreign associates to deliver efficient and strategically sound solutions across a broad range of matters — from initial filing through to enforcement and dispute resolution.

These terms apply to all assignments unless otherwise agreed in writing.
1.1 "Assignment" means any work commissioned by the Client, as confirmed in writing by Aurex IP Advokat AS, or work otherwise carried out in the Client's interest and on the Client's behalf.
1.2 "Client" or "you" means the party that has instructed Aurex IP Advokat AS. Where no written engagement letter exists, the party giving instructions will be regarded as the Client and will be responsible for all fees and costs incurred.
1.3 "Letter of Engagement" means any written confirmation of an Assignment, including any engagement-specific terms. These Terms form part of every Letter of Engagement.
1.4 "Force Majeure Event" means any event beyond a party's reasonable control that could not reasonably have been foreseen or avoided, including acts of God, war, civil unrest, pandemics, or failures of essential utility services.
2.1 All Assignments are accepted upon written confirmation by Aurex IP Advokat AS. Unless the Client objects in writing immediately upon receipt of these Terms or the Letter of Engagement, the Assignment will be deemed accepted on these Terms.
2.2 Where Aurex IP Advokat AS acts as agent in trademark, patent, design, or other intellectual property matters, the Assignment is continuous in nature. Following registration or filing, the Assignment includes handling renewal notifications, third-party correspondence, legal notices, and similar ongoing matters unless the Client instructs otherwise.
2.3 Estimates of fees or timelines are provided in good faith and for planning purposes only. They are not contractually binding unless expressly stated as fixed in writing.
2.4 The Client is responsible for providing accurate, complete, and timely instructions and documentation. Aurex IP Advokat AS accepts no liability for loss of rights or adverse outcomes resulting from absent, incomplete, inaccurate, or delayed instructions or payments from the Client.
3.1 Fees are charged at the hourly rate set out in the Letter of Engagement, or as otherwise agreed in writing. Time is recorded and billed in units of 15 minutes. The hourly rate applies to all work performed on the Assignment, including correspondence, research, preparation, and travel time where relevant.
3.2 For defined, routine matters (such as trademark or design searches), Aurex IP Advokat AS may offer a fixed fee as specified in the Letter of Engagement or in a separate written quote.
3.3 For court proceedings, a reduced hourly rate as specified in the Letter of Engagement may apply, reflecting the extended time commitment typically involved.
3.4 Fees are reviewed annually, effective 1 January each year. The Client will be informed of any rate adjustments in advance.
3.5 All fees are stated exclusive of VAT. VAT will be added where applicable under Norwegian law.
4.1 The Client agrees to reimburse Aurex IP Advokat AS for all necessary out-of-pocket expenses incurred in connection with the Assignment. This includes official fees (such as filing, registration, and renewal fees), fees of foreign agents or local counsel, and any other reasonable costs directly attributable to the Assignment.
4.2 Disbursements are passed on at cost, with no mark-up. Expenses incurred in foreign currencies will be invoiced at the exchange rate applicable on the date of payment.
4.3 Where Aurex IP Advokat AS engages foreign agents, local counsel, or other third parties on the Client's behalf, it does so as the Client's representative. The Client is directly responsible for such third parties' fees and costs, whether invoiced through Aurex IP Advokat AS or directly.
5.1 Invoices are issued monthly, covering fees and reimbursable expenses incurred during the calendar month. Payment is due within 14 days of the invoice date, by bank transfer to the account indicated on the invoice, without deduction or set-off.
5.2 Invoices are delivered by email in PDF format as standard. Alternative invoicing formats (such as EHF/PEPPOL or portal upload) must be agreed in writing before the Assignment commences and may be subject to an additional administrative charge.
5.3 In the event of overdue payment, Aurex IP Advokat AS reserves the right to charge statutory interest on the outstanding amount, to suspend work on the Assignment, and/or to retain any documents or files in its possession until full payment has been received.
5.4 If the Client is required by applicable law to withhold or deduct tax from payments to Aurex IP Advokat AS, the invoiced amount shall be grossed up so that Aurex IP Advokat AS receives the full net amount originally invoiced.
5.5 Aurex IP Advokat AS may request an advance payment at the commencement of, or during, an Assignment. Such advance will be applied against the final invoice.
6.1 Aurex IP Advokat AS will treat all non-public information received in connection with an Assignment as strictly confidential. Confidential information will only be disclosed where required by law or regulation, where necessary to defend against a claim, or with the Client's prior written consent.
6.2 The Client acknowledges that Aurex IP Advokat AS is subject to equivalent confidentiality obligations towards its other clients and may not disclose or use information obtained from them, even where such information might be of interest to the Client.
6.3 Unless instructed otherwise in writing, Aurex IP Advokat AS is permitted to reference the Client's name and a general description of the nature of services rendered in its marketing materials, provided the matter is publicly known and no commercially sensitive information is disclosed.
7.1 The Client authorises Aurex IP Advokat AS to collect, process, and store personal data about the Client and its representatives as necessary to provide the services, comply with legal obligations, and maintain internal records. Personal data will be handled in accordance with applicable data protection legislation, including the GDPR as implemented in Norwegian law.
7.2 Unless otherwise instructed in writing, Aurex IP Advokat AS is permitted to communicate with the Client, including transmitting invoices and other confidential information, by standard email using the addresses provided by the Client.
8.1 Aurex IP Advokat AS maintains procedures to identify and manage potential conflicts of interest. Where a conflict arises that cannot appropriately be managed, Aurex IP Advokat AS will notify the Client and may need to withdraw from the Assignment.
8.2 Aurex IP Advokat AS may act for parties whose interests may be adverse to the Client's in matters unrelated to the Assignment, provided that applicable professional rules are observed and Client confidentiality is maintained.
9.1 Aurex IP Advokat AS is subject to Norwegian anti-money laundering legislation and is required to verify the identity of its clients and, where applicable, their beneficial owners. The Client agrees to provide any identification documentation requested promptly. Aurex IP Advokat AS is legally obliged to report suspicions of money laundering to the relevant authorities without notifying the Client and will not be liable for any consequence of doing so.
10.1 All intellectual property rights in deliverables created specifically for the Client in the performance of an Assignment vest in the Client upon full payment of the fees relating to those deliverables.
10.2 Nothing in these Terms restricts Aurex IP Advokat AS's right to draw on general knowledge, skills, and experience acquired in the course of the Assignment in future work for other clients.
11.1 Aurex IP Advokat AS's liability is limited to direct losses. Aurex IP Advokat AS is not liable for indirect or consequential losses, including loss of profit, loss of revenue, loss of business opportunity, or loss of goodwill.
11.2 Any opinion given by Aurex IP Advokat AS regarding the likely outcome of an Assignment does not constitute a guarantee of that outcome. Decisions on commercial strategy and risk remain the Client's responsibility.
11.3 Aurex IP Advokat AS accepts no liability for errors, delays, or failures caused by official authorities, foreign agents or counsel, third-party service providers, or events beyond Aurex IP Advokat AS's reasonable control.
11.4 If the Client is ordered to pay another party's legal costs, that obligation rests solely with the Client. If costs awarded in favour of the Client are lower than Aurex IP Advokat AS's fees, the Client remains liable for the difference.
12.1 Aurex IP Advokat AS maintains professional liability insurance in accordance with the requirements of the Norwegian Bar Association. Details of coverage are available upon request.
13.1 Either party may terminate an Assignment by written notice. The Client remains liable for all fees and expenses incurred up to the date of termination, and for any steps Aurex IP Advokat AS must take to protect the Client's rights following termination.
13.2 Aurex IP Advokat AS may terminate an Assignment with immediate effect if the Client fails to pay an overdue invoice within a reasonable time after notice, fails to provide adequate instructions, or if continued representation would require Aurex IP Advokat AS to act contrary to applicable professional rules or law.
13.3 Aurex IP Advokat AS retains a lien over Client documents and funds in its possession until all outstanding fees and expenses have been paid in full.
14.1 Neither party shall be liable for failure or delay in performing its obligations to the extent caused by a Force Majeure Event. The affected party shall give prompt written notice and use reasonable efforts to mitigate the impact. The obligation to make payments already due is not excused by a Force Majeure Event.
15.1 These Terms and any Assignment governed by them are subject to Norwegian law.
15.2 Any dispute arising out of or in connection with an Assignment shall first be referred to mediation. If unresolved, the dispute shall be submitted to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Norwegian courts, with Oslo District Court (Oslo tingrett) as the agreed venue.
16.1 Any complaint or claim relating to Aurex IP Advokat AS's performance must be raised without undue delay and no later than 60 days after completion of the relevant part of the Assignment. Complaints pertaining to an attorney assignment are subject to the rules of the Norwegian Bar Association (Advokatforeningen).
12.1 Aurex IP Advokat AS opprettholder ansvarsforsikring i samsvar med Advokatforeningens krav.
